From “White Castle” to “House” to the White House

Kal Penn, now working at the White HouseKal Penn, best known for his role as Kumar in the Harold and Kumar franchise and the television show House, has reportedly left acting to pursue a political career.

Yep, the guy best known for smoking weed on the big screen with a mock-up of former President George W. Bush will now be working directly for the current U.S. President.

“(The Office of Public Liaison & Intergovernmental Affairs) do outreach with the American public and with different organizations. They’re basically the front door of the White House. They take out all of the red tape that falls between the general public and the White House.

“I love what I do as an actor. I couldn’t love it more. But probably from the time I was a kid, I really enjoyed that balance between the arts and public service. I thought this might be the right time to go off and do something else.

“There’s not a lot of financial reward in these jobs. Obviously, the opportunity to serve in a capacity like this is an incredible honor.”

My first thought was: whaaaaat?

My second though was: does this mean there won’t be a third Harold and Kumar? I somewhat doubt the White House would appreciate one of their spokespersons lighting up on the screen again. I dunno. I’m kinda bummed, because I really liked the last H&K — one of those no-brain comedies that’s fun to watch while stoned intoxicated, as was the first film.

But mostly I’m bummed at the prospect of not getting to see Neil Patrick Harris talking about his love for that Whoopi Goldberg stand-in anymore.

What do you think?
